Moving to America may seem quite a straightforward transition as expat re-locations go. After all, they speak English, right? However, there are still many things that are lost in translation and it can be frustrating trying to find familiar foodstuffs, especially when catering for a family.

This book covers it all... and not just the obvious pitfalls of differing pronunciation! This guide is written with several uses in mind. For the nervous newbie expat trying to plan for an upcoming move it provides plenty of detail on the US shopping experience, where and how to shop, the key differences by food group, holiday-specific food shopping, suggested alternatives to British favourites and ways to obtain the things-you-just-can't-do-without! There is a particular emphasis on easing the transition for families with children, with kid-friendly favourites included and a whole chapter on babies and kids. There is also a chapter for people with restricted diets.

Usefully, the author has included a couple of suggested shopping lists... one to help the newly arrived expat survive the first few days in temporary accommodation, and a more detailed list to help restock your pantry with the things you need!

The book is also written to be used as a reference book that can be picked up and used as the need arises... where on Earth can I find marzipan? For this purpose there is a clickable, alphabetical keyword index that will enable the reader to find the relevant answers quickly.

An invaluable resource for the new and seasoned Brit abroad!

The British Expat Guide to Grocery Shopping in America eBook Maxine Cleminson

I read this book as an American who's spent many years living abroad, and was curious about what someone would advise a British expat about shopping in American grocery stores. Some of it was amusing and perhaps a bit melodramatic (there are a lot of exclamation points!). And these days, any traveler with a bit of resourcefulness and a credit card can find almost anything they want from anywhere in the world. That said, some parts would definitely be extremely useful to someone unfamiliar with cooking in the US. The difference in measurements is a prime example. Overall, I think this book would give a nervous expat a sense of calm, and for a few dollars it would be worth it.

Sorry you dislike our food so much. I had no idea British market quality was so superior to ours. Quite a revelation.
All the things you need to know! Very informative. Have recommended it to friends already, and it covers all food types.
Excellent book - really helpful. Already recommended it.
Great book full of good tips and advice. Would highly recommend for Brits in the USA.
Brilliant little guide, especially for someone relocating to Texas! I've been here for 37 years but it was still an interesting read and very well written. So happy you mentioned "Phoenicia" - for lamb - love that place but took me about 20 years to find it! Thank you again for putting all this info in one place.
The title says it all. Even if you're not a British expat, really anyone from Europe will appreciate this book. Perhaps it's a reminder of what you can (and can't) get, or perhaps you'll enjoy reading how names of things change when they cross the Atlantic.

For Americans looking to move to England, her language will get you geared up for shopping in British stores - it works both ways.
As a frequent reader of British literature, this book answered a lot of questions for me. Plus it's a good, lively read. Always fascinating to see American life and culture through the eyes of an intelligent, thoughtful out-sider without an ax to grind. Thanks, Maxine. Hope things continue to go well for you and your family.
